Seagulls
The European Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) is a large gull (up to 26 inches or 66 cm long). One of the best known of all gulls along the shores of western Europe, it was once abundant. It breeds across Northern Europe, Western Europe, Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and the Baltic states. Some European Herring Gulls, especially those resident in colder areas, migrate further south in winter, but many are permanent residents, e.g. in the British Isles, Iceland, or on the North Sea shores. European Herring Gulls are also abundant around inland rubbish dumps, and some have even adapted to life in inland cities.
Pigeons
Feral pigeons (Columba livia), also called city doves, city pigeons, or street pigeons, are derived from domestic pigeons that have returned to the wild. The domestic pigeon was originally bred from the wild Rock Dove, which naturally inhabits sea-cliffs and mountains. Rock (i.e. ‘wild’), domestic and feral pigeons are all the same species and will readily interbreed. Feral pigeons find the ledges of buildings to be a substitute for sea cliffs, have become adapted to urban life, and are abundant in towns and cities throughout much of the world.
Bird proofing is carried out using a variety of methods dependant on circumstance and is assessed by our surveyor.
Proofing methods include:
Netting
We use netting to enclose affected areas where necessary using stainless steel straining wire and net to prevent access to problem areas.
Anti-roosting spikes
These are fixed to ledges and pipework using clear silicone to prevent birds from landing.
Post and Wire
A method using a wire strung between two post tensioned by a spring to prevent birds landing.
